'Maybe he was hungry?'
Sean forgives a soldier who stole his battered sausage.
“Sean!” says Hugh in Derry, “have you ever forgiven the soldier who took your battered sausage?”
“Thank you for reminding me of that,” Sean says. “I think I have. And for the benefit of anyone who doesn’t know it, the story is that we were out having a few drinks, a friend of mine and I. This was a few years ago. And we called into a local chippie called Dickie Gallagher’s. I asked for a couple of battered sausages, and we were walking towards Rosemount. I had a plan for my journey to save the sausages, so I had eaten some chips, and nibbled one sausage, and one wasn’t touched. It was sitting in the paper. And an army foot patrol was out, and they were coming towards us and this soldier reached into my paper… and took the battered sausage. I said a few nasty words at the time, as off he went, with it crammed in his mouth. But I think it’s time to forgive and forget. Maybe he was hungry…”
