Sheila Jordan in tribute

Soweto pays tribute to the late pioneering American jazz singer Sheila Jordan, who sadly died on 11 August 2025 aged 96.

‘Round Midnight is presented by award-winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch. This weekday late-night show celebrates the thriving UK jazz scene and spotlights the best new music alongside incredible acts from past decades.

In this Friday night programme, Soweto pays tribute to the late pioneering American jazz singer Sheila Jordan, who sadly died on 11 August 2025 aged 96.

Tonight, Soweto presents a conversation which aired exclusively for ‘Round Midnight back in January 2025. Sheila had sat down in her New York apartment to share some highlights and stories from her incredible career.

A core member of the bebop era, Sheila had befriended Charlie Parker, who nicknamed her the singer with the golden ears, hung out at the legendary Minton’s Playhouse and took harmony lessons with Lennie Tristano. She had stories about everyone – from Mingus, Monk and Miles Davis to Kenny Dorham and Bud Powell.

Join us to remember Sheila and her phenomenal life and legacy.
