Talking Turkey

Journalist Aoife Moore is in Istanbul with Martin, who is getting ‘Turkey teeth’, and Chloe, who is getting a boob job. But for Lauren, a mummy makeover abroad meant emergency surgery at home.

Aoife continues her investigation into the booming world of cosmetic tourism. She meets 34-year-old Lauren, who travelled to Turkey for a mummy makeover – a combination of surgical procedures aimed at restoring the body’s appearance after childbirth. However, shortly after returning home, Lauren developed sepsis and had to have emergency surgery. Aoife accompanies Lauren to a follow-up appointment with her NHS surgeon as she continues to navigate both the physical and mental scars. The consultant plastic surgeon warns that more patients are presenting with serious infections and complications due to inadequate aftercare. The NHS policy is clear: support can only be provided in emergency situations.

Aoife tries to get a meeting with Lauren’s Turkish hospital at a surgery roadshow, but they decline. Determined to understand the process first hand, Aoife travels to Turkey and reconnects with Chloe, who is preparing for her birthday boob job. Aoife joins her for a consultation, where they discuss implant sizes and expectations, offering a glimpse into how these decisions are made.

Turkey is also a major destination for people in search of cosmetic dentistry, which often costs up to 70 per cent less than in the UK. Aoife meets Martin from Belfast, who is chasing the perfect smile with a full set of veneers - a style often dubbed ‘Turkey teeth.’
