Builth Wells 15
From humble Welsh roots, Laura Ashley built a fashion empire. David meets fashion follower Karen, who has more than 700 Laura Ashley items in her collection.
David Harper delves into the fascinating history of a Welsh fashion icon in this edition of Bargain Hunt from Mid Wales. Born in Merthyr Tydfil in 1925, Laura Ashley’s dresses and decor took the nation by storm in the 1970s, making a mark on homes up and down the country.
Hoping to sew up some profits are two teams of bargain hunters shopping at Builth Wells antiques fair. On the red team are bank managers and friends Rose and Sharon, skippered by expert Thomas Forrester. In blue are married couple and amateur actors Rae and Henry, guided by Kate Bliss.
With the clock counting down, the reds take a shine to a rusty planter in the shape of a bicycle, but Thomas isn’t impressed! Meanwhile, on the blue team, Rae gets cold feet when she learns the price of a ceramic bed warmer. Then it’s over to auctioneer Ben Lloyd in Newtown to hammer out a win for one of the teams. Watch out for one bonus buy which really sparkles at auction!
