Stormy Applause, adapted from Rostislav Dubinsky鈥檚 memoir, tells how the Borodin Quartet rose from idealistic students in Moscow to cultural ambassadors of the Soviet Union, their music shaped as much by politics as by artistry. In America, they are dazzled by the abundance and openness of the West, but success abroad brings new strains at home. Tempers flare, loyalties fray, and the bond that once held them together is pushed to breaking point, as each must decide whether to bend to the state, betray a friend, or gamble everything on escape.
