Jamz explores how Kuduro, Batida, and other Afro-Portuguese styles have shaped Lisbon’s soundscape, with insights from Kalaf Epalanga, Pongo and more.

In this episode, Jamz explores the music of the PALOP countries (Países Africanos de Língua Oficial Portuguesa), highlighting how sounds from primarily Angola, but also Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, and beyond have migrated through Lisbon, shaping a bold, Afro-diasporic club culture that continues to evolve.

We trace a journey from Luanda to Lisbon, uncovering how genres like Kuduro, Batida, Tarraxo, and Funaná have become vital tools of cultural expression, resistance, and joy in post-colonial Europe.

Featuring voices from across this vibrant scene, the episode hears from Kalaf Epalanga (co-founder of Buraka Som Sistema and author of Whites Can Dance Too), who reflects on identity, sound, and the Lisbon–Luanda connection. Pongo, the electrifying Kuduro performer and international star, speaks on her artistic journey and the role of women in the genre, while Coréon Dú, Angolan recording artist, creative director, and activist, shares insights into Kuduro’s evolution and its intersections with gender, class, and queerness. DJ and filmmaker Rita Maia, known for her documentary Batida de Lisboa, offers a lens on Lisbon’s musical underground. We also hear from Vanyfox, one of the new wave of producers redefining Lisbon’s club sound; DJ N Fox, a pioneering figure from the Príncipe Discos roster; and Dariiofox, a rising Lisbon-based artist with roots in London, sharing his perspective on identity and sound from the next generation’s point of view.
