Zakiya Mckenzie - Les Landes, Jersey
Writer Zakiya McKenzie travels to Jersey’s Les Landes plateau, linking its witch-trial past with her Caribbean heritage to explore how stories move across seas and centuries.
Writer Zakiya McKenzie explores Les Landes in Jersey- a dramatic coastal plain once central to community gatherings and, more darkly, to witch trials between the 16th and 17th centuries. Connecting the Caribbean landscapes of her heritage to the windswept outcrop of the Channel Islands, Zakiya reflects on displacement, resilience, and how the sea carries stories across generations.
The series Empty Spaces explores the beauty and melancholy of abandoned places that still hold meaning. Each episode invites a poet to inhabit one site of their choosing and breathe imagination, memory, and lyricism back into the surroundings via poetry.
