A Percussion Special with Sarathy Korwar

Percussion maestro and composer Sarathy Korwar selects his favourite roots-based music centered around percussion and rhythm, picking from different traditions.

Tabla maestro and composer Sarathy Korwar selects global roots-based music that has informed his approach to rhythm and melody in a special edition of Music Planet focusing on percussion traditions from around the world.

Born in the US, Sarathy Korwar grew up in Ahmedabad and Chennai, India, where he started learning to play the tabla before moving to London to complete his musical studies. Since then, he has become one of the most respected voices in jazz and contemporary music, leading the UPAJ Collective - a group of South Asian jazz and Indian classical musicians - and collaborating with the likes of Shabaka Hutchings, clarinettist Arun Ghosh and producer Hieroglyphic Being. His new album, There Is Beauty, There Already - made up entirely of live drums, drum-triggered electronics and human voices - will be presented live for the first time on the 15th of November at the ICA Institute of Contemporary Arts as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival.
