Episode 1

Episode 1 of 3

A Scottish battalion heads to Nato’s war game while another packs for Cyprus. Meanwhile, ceremonial drills begin back at home in preparation for the King's summer stay at Balmoral.

As tensions rise on Nato’s eastern front, a Scottish battalion moves with quiet precision. From the shadows of Edinburgh to the dense forests of Estonia, we follow their covert journey to Exercise Hedgehog, Nato’s largest military exercise, where 17,000 troops prepare for the possibility of a Russian advance. The countdown begins the moment their boots touch Estonian soil. Trenches must be dug, barricades built and weapons readied as troops adapt to the pressure of simulated warfare.

Back in the UK, another battalion prepares for a different kind of mission as soldiers in Catterick pack up their lives for a two-year deployment to Cyprus, where they will become a British Army Regional Support Battalion poised to respond to conflict in the Middle East and beyond. However, before they go, they must prove their rifle skills and marksmanship under the unforgiving eye of their commanders. As they work tirelessly to dismantle the entire barracks, the soldiers' emotions run high with the weight of leaving home once again.

Back in Scotland, tradition meets discipline as the third battalion begin spring drills, their first test before assuming ceremonial duties guarding the King during his summer stay at Balmoral. Under the watchful gaze of the garrison sergeant major, every button, boot and drill movement must be flawless.

Three battalions. One regiment. A world on edge. This is reality for a modern soldier - caught between the demands of war, ceremony and the quiet moments in-between.
