Korngold Violin Concerto
Elizabeth Alker marks the 90th birthday of the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Scottish Symphony Orchestra, she also has exclusive recordings of great Romantic violin concertos and chamber music from Sweden.
Throughout the week, Elizabeth Alker introduces an afternoon of compelling performances from the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Scottish Symphony Orchestra in their 90th anniversary year and shines a spotlight on violin concertos of the Romantic era. There’s also music from Sweden, including recitals by Piotr Anderszewski, the Swedish Radio Choir and the 2025 Change Music Festival.
On today’s Classical Live, the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Scottish Symphony Orchestra performs Mozart’s 24th Piano Concerto with soloist Elisabeth Leonskaja and conductor Ludovic Merlot; and we’ll hear 'For Laura, after Bach', composed by the orchestra’s chief conductor Ryan Wigglesworth dedicated to the memory of former ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Scottish Symphony Orchestra Leader Laura Samuel.
From the Swedish chamber music festival 2025 Music for Change, Elizabeth has Dvorak’s Piano Quintet in A, op. 81; plus Elizabeth has a selection of music from the 100th birthday celebrations of the Swedish Radio Choir.
Today’s Romantic violin concerto comes from Korngold and features Vilde Frang; and with advent approaching, there’s also time for a fitting Bach Cantata - BWV51 performed by Harpa Ósk Björnsdóttir and the HallgrÃm's Church Choir in ReykjavÃk last December.
