Contemporary and classic tracks from around the world.
Brazil makes a couple of appearances in this week’s programme: first in the person of Betto Villares, better known for his film & TV scores, who ventures into a new territory with a self-titled debut album. It’s an eclectic mix: “I’m enchanted with the complexity - the local scenes, the pop scene, both traditional and trashy music from Brazil,” Betto says. Charlie also plays a track from the forthcoming Television album by Baaba Maal, produced by New York’s Brazilian Girls. Travelling in the opposite direction from London, Charlie is intrigued by a debut album of the singer Mamer who hails from the Xinjiang region of China and by archive recordings of Muharrem Ertas, the Turkish baglama master. Plus there is another chance to sample Radio Kijada and Imam Baildi.
