The impact of the recession on Africa is a big question because parts of the continent were starting to get their economic act together.

Some countries like Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique and Botswana were improving their economic performance markedly until what you might call the great shudder or the GFC as it's called in some parts of the world - Global Financial Crisis if you want to impress your friends with a new piece of jargon.

Shanta Devarajan is the World Bank's chief economist for Africa and Stephen Evans asked him how he sees the current economic situation on his patch.
