Contemporary and classic tracks from around the world. Playlist at bbcworldservice.com
Charlie introduces more musicians who appeared at this year’s WOMAD festival in the UK including Mec Yek, a Belgian band fronted by two Romani singers from Slovakia; Ba Cissoko, the kora player from Guinea Conakry determined to remake the venerable traditions of his native land for the 21st century; Cuban expatriates Orishas; and Cimarron, seven virtuosic Colombians from the cattle-rearing region of Llanos Orientales.
Cimarron turned out to be the discovery of the festival for Charlie: another unexpected pleasure was introducing the doyen of Ethiopian jazz singers Alemayehu Eshete live from the stage. Eshete has dozens of records to his name while Victor Deme from Burkina Faso has just cut his first album, aged 45.
