Contemporary and classic tracks from around the world. Playlist at bbcworldservice.com
After a break of five years Rai star Khaled has recently brought out a new album with mostly acoustic accompaniment to his trademark supercharged vocals. Charlie also revisits Queen Ifrica’s recent album Montego Bay on which the Jamaican reggae singer pays tribute to her Rastafarian roots and speaks out in defence of abused children. The success of New Zealand dub reggae band Fat Freddy’s Drop is a testimony to how popular reggae has become all over the world: their first studio album did very well in the charts. Can their second offering, Dr Boondigga and the Big BW, repeat the success? Mohamed Ilyas is the grand man of Zanzibar tarab music and his latest CD was captured in a single week in the fine acoustic of Sauti za Zanzibar Radio Studio in Stone Town.
