Angela Coupe & Carol Robinson - Hats on Heads

Lincolnshire based Angela and Carol create bespoke millinery for special occasions. They now want £20,000 to move the fledging business forward.

In an extended exclusive website edit, will their pitch turn the heads of the Online Dragons or will the Midland milliners head for the exit?

Angela and Carol deliver a polished pitch to the Dragons, outlining their business which involves both bespoke and retail millinery and opportunities for customers to make their own hats.

At the end of their pitch they present a delighted Julie Meyer with her own hat, leaving Shaf Rasul to ask "Where's mine?". Angel and Carol informed a disgruntled Shaf that they haven't made him a hat, which they acknowledge is "very unfair".

Julie on the other hand compliments them on their "fabulous" hats. However, it's not all about the aesthetics for Julie as she immediately begins to question them about their finances.

Angela admits that whilst they took £19,000 last year this did include a loss of £4,000. Next year, however, looks healthier with an expected turnover of £45,000 even without investment from the Dragons.

Shaf then questions the pair about what exactly they want out of the business. Angela and Carol both admit that they don't particularly want to be rich, but that they want to build up a successful business. For them, this means having a viable business and a brand which is recognised.

Shaf seems to be concerned about this, saying that they wouldn't be upset if they didn't make a profit next year. But, the duo reassure him that they would, and they would like to be able to draw a wage from the business as they not doing this as a hobby.

Julie is also still concerned about the pair's attitude, asking Carol if she has put money in the business too. Carol admits that she hasn't and Julie goes on to question Angela about why she has made Carol her 50/50 business partner. Angela tells Julie that Carol brings lots of skills which she doesn't have to the business.

Julie goes on to quiz Carol about the biggest risk she's ever taken, but Carol is forced to admit she is unable to think of anything. For Angela, the biggest risk both herself and Carol have taken is to pick themselves up from going through a divorce and being widowed respectively and getting out there and getting on with things.

Whilst Julie tells the pair that she commends this she seems to have reached a less favourable decision about their business. Whilst she feels it is "a gem" of a business, she doesn't see the "killer instinct" or the risk-taking mentality needed to make this a leading business. For that reason, she's out.

A still disgruntled Shaf then tells the pair that since they walked in they've aimed their pitch solely at Julie. This has been a mistake, as he has a lot of contacts within the fashion industry and, had they aimed the pitch at him, he would have considered investing. He tells them they should never write anyone off, particularly not a potential investor. On that basis, he's out.
