Death of Stalin
When the dictator Joseph Stalin died in 1953 the whole of the Soviet Union was thrust into mourning. But alongside those who were genuinely grieving for the dead leader, there were many citizens who had to pretend they were sad, because expressing their relief would have been too dangerous.
