Contemporary and classic tracks from around the world. Playlist at bbcworldservice.com
Charlie died recently following a long illness. The ѿý World Service is currently repeating a series of programmes he recorded which look at the 'greatest hits' of world music. This programme was first broadcast in July 2009.
It's week 10 of Charlie's exploration of World Music's hits. He weaves around the globe, playing tunes that reached wider international success than they might have expected to have done. There's the track which was famously misheard as "My Ears Are Alight"(and was the first Jamaican record to reach the US Top 10), a Latin American song that more-or-less created a new style of music, something from South Africa's most famous songstress, a Brazilian group singing a worldwide hit that came from Mexico, there's a Trinidadian tune about Brazil, a French Antilles group and a Congolese guitarist who lived in France. Lots of glorious diverse sounds to suit every ear.
