Forest fieldcraft

The roe deer are not up early, they’re out late - because they would have been feeding in the forest at night and they’re just having a final snack before they merge into the trees. It’s as if they were never there. One has just got those little tiny bumps on its head, not exactly magnificent antlers. The fieldcraft? If you want to get a glimpse of deer - or in fact most things in the forest - get up early, stay very, very quiet, and find somewhere where your silhouette isn’t visible, which isn’t difficult in the forest as you’ve nearly always got a background of something. Don’t move around quickly and try and stay downwind. Basically, downwind means that the wind is coming towards you, so the deer can’t smell you, and theoretically you could smell the deer.
