Having prevaricated so long in the South, Essex receives firm instruction from London to go north and engage O’Neill. When they do meet, however, Essex agrees an unauthorised ceasefire. He rushes to London to explain himself to an infuriated Elizabeth – but would the great favour in which she has always held him be enough to save the disgraced Essex from his Queen’s wrath?
