A selection of the best in jazz music.
In 1959 a 33 year old tenor star recorded an LP of small group jazz. Tommy had seen service in the big bands of the day and he was also working in the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Show Band. That meant a great deal of exposure. The LP that he made in the late fifties has been re-issued and you can hear Tommy talking about his time in the music business which is still happening for him! We hear from a young Duke Ellington band full of musicians who stayed with Duke for years and there’s a Strayhorn composition which is aired again by an octet led by Alan Barnes. Charles Mingus forsakes his double bass for one session and plays solo piano while we unearth some early sides from the Prestige label which give a foretaste of some of the talent in New York around 1950. The Bateman Brothers pay tribute to Louis Armstrong with a version of Muskrat Ramble while we remember Eric Delaney, the showman drummer who died recently.
