Lane goes to talk to some vagrants who are sitting on the side of the Thames drinking. They are all either mad, or drunk (or both!). The mood turns nasty when Lane refuses to have a drink with them. Lane tries to make a run for it, but the vagrants throw stones at him, one of which hits him on the head, knocking him unconscious.
