Haruki Murakami’s acclaimed 8th novel is a detective story set in Tokyo, in which the real and the surreal coexist. It’s been adapted for the stage by filmmaker Stephen Earnhart. He tells Clemency Burton-Hill about his impressions of the city and its people which inform this ambitious, yet subtle, theatrical production.
