Here's the new candidate - same as the old candidates?
What attributes do politicians really need? Ambition for sure – energy too – but perhaps most important of all might be a thick skin. Politics is a tough business and when it gets to level of running for the US Presidency it’s beyond tough – it’s brutal. That’s what Herman Cain has just been discovering. The pizza mogul wants the Republican presidential nomination. And as soon as he started to look like a credible candidate, allegations about his past started to emerge.
Mark Mardell says the accusations against Mr Cain, which date back to the mid-1990s, have damaged if not ruined his chances of running for the White House; yet he's also gathered support from unexpected quarters.
Each year they plough up bones
The second Sunday of November is Remembrance Sunday – a day for people to pay tribute to the sacrifices made by soldiers who died in conflict. The ever-diminishing group of people who fought in the Second World War – 1939 to 45 - and who are still alive, are very highly regarded in the UK. With great dignity, they will walk through the country’s cities towns and villages and receive warm applause from crowds of people who will line the roads to thank them for helping to defeat fascism.
And in France itself, as Christine Finn has found out, some people will be remembering a conflict even further back - the First World War of 1914 to 18.
