Tim Berne and Snakeoil - Live concert
Jez Nelson presents US saxophonist Tim Berne and his new Snakeoil band in concert. Berne moved to New York in the 70s to learn from Julius Hemphill, whose gritty R&B sound Berne has integrated into a style that explores shifting rhythms and spiky melodic lines. In recent years he has played in alt-jazz groups alongside the likes of Jim Black and Craig Taborn, and the Snakeoil quartet marks his debut as a leader on the ECM label. The band explores Berne's texturally detailed compositions and includes clarinettist Oscar Noriega, pianist Matt Mitchell and drummer Ches Smith.
