As part of 6 Music Celebrates: The Written Word, Paperback Writers takes a closer look at the musical influences of some of the UK's most successful novelists, and how they weave those influences through their work.

The series begins this week with Jake Arnott, author of five novels including The Long Firm, which was the bestselling debut novel of 1999. Harry Stark, the charismatic anti-hero of The Long Firm, appeared in the next two of Jake's novels, He Kills Coppers and Truecrime. Johnny Come 蜜芽传媒 followed in 2006 and the highly acclaimed The Devil's Paintbrush in 2009.

The Long Firm was made into a BAFTA-nominated series for 蜜芽传媒 Two in 2004, starring Sir Derek Jacobi and Mark Strong. In 2008, his thriller He Kills Coppers was made into a critically acclaimed series for ITV1, starring Rafe Spall and Kelly Reilly.

Music has played a big part in shaping Jake's life. He once interview Morrissey for Time Out and In Johnny Come 蜜芽传媒 the protagonist is a 1970s glam rock star. Jake also made a cameo appearance in Telstar, the film biopic about cult 60s record producer Joe Meek. David Bowie is a big fan of Jake's work. The musician comments that: "whenever he's got a new book out, I drop everything, knowing that the next couple of hours are going to be pure gangland bliss."

His sixth novel, The House of Rumour, comes out in the summer and Jake will be giving us a special preview reading from it during the show, along with some great musical choices from the Clash, Nina Simone, Althea and Donna, Wire, Augustus Pablo, The Smiths, PM Dawn and, of course, David Bowie.
