Matt Wells reports on how The White House and the Catholic Church are at war over birth control and how this could affect his chances of re-election.

It will be another five months before Americans go to the polls to decide who it will be, Barack Obama or Mitt Romney, who they want to lead their country.
President Obama has though made an enemy of a group of voters who he traditionally could have counted on to be his allies.

Late last year, as part of his swingeing healthcare reform bill, President Obama introduced an amendment that would force Catholic institutions to provide insurance for birth control. The Catholic Bishops Conference has come out fighting, accusing the President of launching an attack on religious liberty.

The church urged its followers to “vote with their Catholic conscience”, Heart and Soul examines whether the Presidents stance on birth control, and most recently same sex marriage will lead to an exodus of Catholic voters which could threaten his bid for a second term.

Matt Wells travels to Capitol Hill to hear whether Americas Catholics, who make up around a quarter of the electorate will follow their ‘Catholic conscience’, he will ask why President Obama has gambled with the vote of such a huge number of people or whether the church as got it wrong and Catholic voters won’t necessarily go with the advice of the church when it comes to casting their vote. In a recent questionnaire, 98% of Catholic women admit they use birth control.

As the church gears up to launch a ‘Fortnight of Freedom’ to counter this attack on their religious liberty, Matt Wells examines how with the increasing influence of conservative, evangelical Hispanic, Catholics could turn against Barack Obama and de-rail his return journey to the White House.
