Hugh Schofield has lived in Paris for many years and in that time has often reflected on differences of manners and mores. Sometimes his failure to do things the French way becomes obvious in the unlikeliest situations - from buying a croissant to taking a jog. While slogging round his local park recently, he was moved to wonder why he seemed to be bumping into other runners so often. Is it really a matter of deep social conformity?
