
Surgery in the 19th century
The Industrial Revolution signalled a major shift in surgery. Village-based wise women and magic became less significant as the town/city-based doctor and surgeon became more skilled. These men had greater opportunities to practise and experiment. The Industrial Revolution also afforded the surgeons better instruments and technological advances that ultimately enabled Harvey Cushing to carry out successful operations on the brain in the 1900s.
