A selection of the best in jazz music.
We have two tunes written by Billy Strayhorn with one of the bands named after him. Then there’s a Gerry Mulligan composition and performance which is dedicated to the composer. We’ll continue our comparisons, this time between tunes. Sweet Man was written in the twenties and we have one version from 1925 then a further performance from 1944. So it’s from the California Ramblers of the twenties to Miss Rhapsody and Slam Stewart in the forties. We hear from Ruby Braff in 1972 with a female drummer, wife of a very eminent saxophonist. Eddie Jefferson comes up with a bit of history in vocalese recounting the story of the New York jazz haunt named after Charlie Parker, Birdland
