River valleys - The Rakaia, New Zealand

The Rakaia river is fed by glaciers in the New Zealand Alps. During the winter, blizzards pound the mountains and in the summer the glacial ice melts. New Zealand is in a mountain-building period and earthquakes are frequent. The river seeps out from under the moraine into a lake. This forms the source of the Rakaia. Landslips and erosion create scree slopes. This, together with freeze-thaw weathering, creates a huge amount of material for the river to carry away.
