Volcanoes on North Island, New Zealand

Much of the land on New Zealand's North Island is made up of volcanic rock. Volcanoes have erupted here since 232AD. In 1886 a line of fire 17km in length opened up in the landscape as a result of an extension boundary. This has left behind a large gash in the landscape. Eruptions here are so frequent that plants have little time to become established. Carbon-14 dating can tell us when eruptions have occurred. With thanks to 'Conservatoire Regional de L'Image'.
