Deserts are eroded by rainwater run-off and the wind. Plants' roots secure the soil around them, but other loose material quickly becomes eroded. Desert soil is far from useless; it is rich in nitrogen and mineral compounds. Minerals from rotting vegetation build up in the topsoil as there is little rainfall to wash them away. If more water was present, many things could be grown here.
