The Franz Joseph Glacier - glacier formation and flow
About two million years ago an ice age created huge glaciers in New Zealand. Today, some glaciers remain due to the sub-zero temperatures found at higher altitudes. The Franz Josef glacier is fed by blizzards bringing fresh snow. The glacier moves slowly downhill, eroding the landscape beneath. Rocks and material are transported downhill and deposited at the base of the glacier.
