The Treaty of Versailles, 1919 (subtitled)
In 1919, the leaders of the victorious nations met at Versailles to make a peace settlement. The French bore the brunt of attacks on the Western Front and wanted to keep Germany weak. The British thought that this might lead to trouble later on but finally the Germans were forced to accept a harsh settlement. They had to hand over their navy to Britain and the US, they were forbidden from manufacturing heavy guns, tanks or aircraft, their army was reduced, their territory and empire were reduced and they were forbidden from keeping troops in the Rhineland. On top of this, Germany faced reparation payments.
