Raw materials in South Wales
Ironstone, coal and limestone are all found in close proximity in South Wales. Together they encouraged economic growth in the area from 1800 until the 1970s. Ironworks gave Britain one of its first industrial landscapes. The works were located close to the source of raw materials such as in South Wales. By the middle of the 19th century, the valleys of South Wales also began to attract coal mining. This saw many of the valleys being transformed. Again industry was drawn to the source of raw materials.
