Tree cover and planting in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland has just 5% tree cover, but it hasn't always been like this. Just after the last Ice Age, oak, elm, elder and Scots pine was abundant. People mainly moved by water because of the dense forestation, but as they settled they cut down the trees to build. With time and climate change, the tree cover reduced even more. In Florencecourt, new trees were planted around the estate, such as silver fir, the Florencecourt Oak, ash trees which have self-seeded, and Irish yew.
