Council housing in the 1920s and 1930s
Councils used the Housing Act of 1924 to build new homes and remove people from slum conditions. In the 1930s, private builders constructed large numbers of houses in the suburbs. They had clean running water and electricity to power new 'luxuries' such as fridges and radiograms. However, these new homes could only be afforded by a richer minority.
