Abraham Lincoln and slavery in the USA
For Abraham Lincoln, the Declaration of Independence meant independence for all men. He detested slavery but called for its restriction rather than its immediate abolition. By the middle of the 19th Century, America was deeply divided. Southerners feared that the North might forbid slavery while Northerners feared slavery might spread to the West. As new states were added to the Union, it threatened to unbalance power. Lincoln felt that the government could not continue in its politically divided state and must go one way or the other.
