Lundavra Farm – a hill sheep farm
Farmer Alastair MacCallum and his son outline the trials, tribulations and achievements of running a hill sheep farm in Scotland. Lundavra farm keeps 1,500 hill ewes. As the farm has very limited arable land, the resulting need to buy in feed makes farming cows unprofitable. The poor soil, hilly landscape, high rainfall, low sunshine and distance from markets make farming in Lundavra very difficult. To keep going, the farm has had to cut down on labour. European subsidy has also helped keep the farm going.
