Properties of alpha, beta and gamma radiation (pt 2/2)
Plutonium rods are used to generate electricity in a nuclear power station. The energy comes from the unstable plutonium nuclei. The nuclei of different atoms produce different type of radiation.
Alpha radiation is a particle made up of two protons and two neutrons. When one neutron in a nucleus changes to a proton, it gives out an electron in the form of Beta radiation. Gamma radiation is an electromagnetic wave sometimes given off by a nucleus that has undergone another form of decay.
