In 1963, a quarter of a million people marched on Washington to highlight racial injustice and to put pressure on Congress to pass Kennedy's Civil Rights Bill. The march was made up of both blacks and whites, with thousands of others offering their support behind the scenes. The event received worldwide media coverage, but the federal government took no political action to deal with the issues raised.
