                Mary, Queen of Scots abdicates
Following the murder of Darnley, widespread rumours suggested Mary and the Earl of Bothwell had plotted the murder together. Bothwell abducted Mary and forced her into a protestant marriage at Dunbar Castle, although, some say she went willingly. Mary soon lost the support of the Scottish nobles and of Catholics. She surrendered to the Scottish nobles, and was taken prisoner and forced to abdicate.
