The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ had had a presence on the internet from 1994, but Lord Birt, then the Director-General of the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½, was quick to recognise its real potential for public service broadcasting. He sought the advice of young people working in the Corporation about which way the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ should turn in the fledgling online world.
