Atheism and the French Revolution
Julian Baggini explores how the French Revolution marked the beginning of new thinking about God and religion. Before this it was usually too dangerous to admit to being an atheist, but the Revolution destroyed the power of the Church and the clergy. Pierre D'Holbach's book, 'Système de la Nature', published in 1770, is seen by many as the 'atheist's Bible'.
