Staff Sergeant Ed Shames gets to his position at the road bridge over the River Douve, a couple of miles outside Carentan. His battalion’s mission was to attack and hold two bridges to prevent the movement of German Panzer divisions and troops across to Utah or Omaha beaches. It would also allow U.S. forces landing on the beaches to link up before pushing into the countryside beyond.
