Writing music for dance

A choreographer and a composer reflect on the challenges of writing effective music for dance. Composer Steve Blake is commissioned to take some footage of a dance routine and write a new piece of music for it. In the music he tries to capture the essence of the complex relationship which is acted out in the duet for dancers – something which is hard to capture in words. He approaches this by choosing an unusual combination of instruments and focusing on the timbral possibilities to create something unusual and aggressive. The choreographer Lea Anderson highlights the importance of having the music reinforce the dance in a way which does not swamp the action or distract from the movement. This clip includes some footage of the final performance.
