Shanties and sea songs with Gareth Malone (pt 1/2)

Choral expert and music educationalist Gareth Malone explores and performs sea shanties on a sailing ship led by an old musical sailor. The presenter explains and demonstrates through performance, how sea shanties were work songs and consequently were rhythmically interesting but melodically repetitive. The role of the shanty-man and purpose of shanties having so many verses, is linked to the hauling of ropes and nautical duties that needed to be done in unison.
