Freedom
Political liberty and a free market economy - we ask whether you can have one without the other. And we also explore the properties of a liberating chemical element - eleutherium.
Economic freedom under authoritarian government - is it possible? We hear from correspondents Gideon Long about Chile's controversial experience under Pinochet, and Gabriel Gatehouse about what really motivated protestors on Kiev's Euromaidan barricades in Ukraine. Two leading academics - China expert Rod Wye of Chatham House and Russia specialist Peter Duncan of the School of Slavonic and East European Studies - discuss whether a free market economy, and the property rights that underpin it, are sustainable in the long-term under a government that is not politically accountable.
Also in the programme, in a latest mini-instalment in our series about the elements of the periodic table, we explore a surprisingly liberating substance called eleutherium. Our regular chemistry miracle-worker, Professor Andrea Sella of University College London, demonstrates how this elusive metal is able to cause iron chains to rust away before your very ears!
