Sally Gold is a maths teacher in Manchester and has been teaching for nine years: "To be a modern teacher...I have to have the analytical skills of a city trader, the management skills of a CEO, the compassion of a social worker, the time mangagament skills of a Swiss clock maker and the patience of a saint. People think I can do all this arrive at 9am and leaving at 3pm."

The Dept for Education says: "Parents will struggle to understand why the NUT is pressing ahead with strikes over the government's measures to let heads pay good teachers more. They called for talks to avoid industrial action, we agreed to their request, and talks have been taking place weekly. Despite this constructive engagement with their concerns, the NUT is taking action that will disrupt parents' lives, hold back children's education and damage the reputation of the profession.鈥�
