Recent controversies "have shaken the trust of the community in the police", Tom Winsor the Chief Inspector of Constabulary has said.

Orgreave, the Stephen Lawrence case and controversy over the resignation of chief whip Andrew Mitchell have led to confidence in the police being "damaged but not broken", HM Chief Inspector of Constabulary said on the publication of the first annual assessment of police.

"It would be an extraordinary exaggeration to say that trust in the police has been broken", Mr Winsor said.

"Confidence of the community in the police is still at very high levels."
